Biographical Note:

Mrs. Elizabeth E. (Gibson) Jackson was the wife of Dr. Edward Brake Jackson (1793-1826), who was a congressman and physician from Virginia.  Dr. Jackson died at the age of 33, leaving his estate to George J. Williams, who, along with Mrs. Jackson, was appointed guardian of his four children.  He was also associated with Dr. William Williams, who may have been a brother-in-law.

Scope and Content Note:

This collection consists of 15 letters written either by Elizabeth E. Jackson, or her daughter Maria Gloria Jackson (ca. 1819-1884) on the margins of the pages of the Alexandria Gazette and Virginia Advertiser, a newspaper that was published in Alexandria, Virginia, beginning in 1834.  Several of the letters are addressed to “Mr. Williams” or “Dear Sir” and probably refer to George J. Williams.  The content concerns mostly personal and family matters.  Of the 18 issues of the newspaper in the collection, two have only a signature and one has no additional writing.  These issues are the “country” edition of the newspaper, published three times a week.
