Biographical Note:

Abraham De Peyster (1696-1767) was the son of Abraham De Peyster (1657-1728). He was a prominent New York City merchant and succeeded his father in the office of provincial treasurer of New York.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection includes two account books that record the financial transactions of the mercantile business operated by Abraham De Peyster from about 1724 to 1763.  Also included is an Account of excess money received by the office of Colonial New York Treasurer, 1729, and a ledger of debit-credit accounts related to the settlement of the estates of Abraham De Peyster and Elizabeth Hamilton, 1772-1773.

Provenance Note:

This collection consists mostly of restored remnants of documents salvaged in the aftermath of the New York State Capitol fire on March 29, 1911.  The original accession records were also lost in the fire so the source of the documents is not known.  The original accession numbers are listed in parentheses at the end of each item’s description.
