Biographical Note:

Charles Hallenbeck was born in Hudson, New York, ca. 1860. He was employed for many years as a feature writer for the Albany Argus, a daily newspaper in Albany, New York. He also contributed articles on historical topics to other newspapers and magazines. Later he went into business printing briefs and cases and other law materials for New York State.  He died at the age of seventy in 1930.  (Information gathered from a letter of Pauline Christie to Arthur Pound, August 10, [1943])

Scope and Content Note:

The papers were originally housed in loose-leaf binders. These papers, the manuscript for “Annals of Steamboating on the Hudson River,” were arranged chronologically, providing a history of steamboat transportation on the Hudson River from 1807 to 1908.  Included is information on the design and construction of steamboats, firms operating steamboats, names of boat captains, and dates of sailing seasons, disasters, and other events.  Many illustrations, as well as newspaper clippings, appear with the text. The book was never published.

Provenance Note:

These papers were officially transferred from the Office of the State Historian to the New York State Library December 4, 1968.   Records in the accession file indicate the papers were deposited with the State Historian, circa 1943-1944, by Pauline (Mrs. Raymond) Christie, the daughter of Charles Hallenbeck.  They were deposited in the library in March 1964 and initially accessioned as collection number 13582, but later changed to SC14824 in 1968 upon official transfer.  The date these papers were created is not stated, but it appears likely it was done between 1910 and 1930.
