Databases in Local History and Genealogy

This list of databases may be useful to those researching local history or genealogy. Databases in the Local History/Genealogy area of the library are designated LH/G. Databases at the Electronic Reference Station (behind the Reference Desk) are designated ERS.  A complete list of our databases is available at the Electronic Reference Station. Databases which list no date are the most recent versions available.

1854 Map of Albany County & 1855 New York State Albany County Census   Albany County names from the 1855 state census transcribed and indexed by the Capital District Genealogical Society.  Includes Shakers.  Note that database does NOT include the City of Albany. Census information is completely searchable. 1854 Map includes index to names on map.  LH/G

19th Century Masterfile Online service that provides access to citations from Poole's Index to Periodical Literature (1802-1906), Stead's Index to Periodicals (1890-1906) and more. Newspaper indices include New York Times Index (1863-1905), New York Daily Tribune Index (1875-1906) and more. Various government indices are also included. Available online at ERS and LH/G.

Accessible Archives Contains six databases: Godey's Ladys Book (1830-1880), The Pennsylvania Gazette (1728-1800), The Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective (November 1860-April 1865), African American Newspapers: The 19th Century, The Pennsylvania Newspaper Record: Delaware County (1819-1870), and The Pennsylvania Genealogical Catalogue: Chester County (1809-1870). America: History and Life (1964+) Abstracts of articles from journals, book reviews and dissertations which cover the history and culture of the U.S. and Canada, from prehistoric times to the present. Available online at ERS and LH/G.

American Civil War Research Database Includes regiment lookup, regimental dynamics, battle directory, battle order directory, personnel directory, photo directory, generals directory, medal of honor soldiers and roll of honor soldiers. Available online at ERS and LH/G.

Army Official Records The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Civil War reports and correspondence compiled by the U.S. Adjutant General's Office and the War Department. Includes index. LH/G

Biography and Genealogy Master Index Index to current and retrospective biographical dictionaries, such as Who's Who. Available online at ERS and LH/G.

Family Histories Bibliographic records of family histories, genealogies and related works held by various libraries and historical societies in the United States. Includes links to the holding libraries and historical societies. Via Genealogical Library Master Catalog. LH/G

FamilySearch Published by the Family History Department of the Church of Latter-day Saints. Includes Ancestral File, U.S. Social Security Death Index, International Genealogical Index and Family History Library Catalog. Available online at http://www.familysearch.org/external link.  ERS and LH/G

Federal Census Indexes-New York State  Indexes for 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1910 Federal Censuses. The 1870 and 1910 indices cover the heads of households and those who have a different surname than the head of household. The 1880 also includes an index to the entire country. LH/G

Genealogical Library Master Catalog Citations to holdings in 18 U.S. libraries. Databases include Family Histories, Genealogical Sources and Local Histories. For more information see the individual descriptions on this list. LH/G

Genealogical Sources Bibliographic records of original and transcribed genealogical records, how-to-guides, family histories, and related works held by various libraries and historical societies in the United States. GenTools Genealogical tool box calculator for calculating birthdate from tombstone date, Soundex name code and more. LH/G

HeritageQuest Online Contains the full text of ProQuest's Genealogy & Local History Collection of 25,000+ family and local history books and the full text of the 1790-1820, 1860-1870 and 1890-1920 census for the entire United States. Other years are browsable.  Available online at ERS and LH/G.

Index to Early American Periodicals Index to periodicals published between 1700 and 1935. Available online at ERS and LH/G.

Index to Griffith's Valuation of Ireland, 1848-1864  Index to survey of private land and buildings in Ireland.  Searchable by name.  Database provides name, county, parish and location.  Additional information, such as occupation, religious affiliation, etc., may be included.  LH/G

Local Histories Bibliographic records of local histories and related works held by various libraries and historical societies in the United States. Includes links to the holding libraries and historical societies. Via Genealogical Library Master Catalog. LH/G

New England Historical and Genealogical Register (1847-1994) Index and text of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register. Includes genealogical and historical articles, biographies, memoirs, diary transcriptions, and church, cemetery, Bible and vital records. LH/G

New York Abstracts of Wills (1665-1801)  Contains full text of 17-volume series from the New York Historical Society.  Covers abstracts of wills on file at the Surrogate's Office in New York City 1665-1801, including abstracts of letters of administration (1744-1800) and abstracts of unrecorded wills prior to 1800.  Includes all original documents found in the records of wills.  Search master index or browse volumes.  LH/G

New York Indian Census (1886-1924) Contains images of the Indian Office census schedules. Covers tribes of the Iroquois Tribal Confederation living on reservations in New York State. LH/G

Newspaper Locator Project GIS database that provides access to New York State Library microfilm newspaper holdings. Includes interactive map. Searchable by title, date, place or county of publication, etc. LH/G

Performing Arts in Colonial American Newspapers Index to poetry, dance, theater and music references in American newspapers published between 1690 and 1783. Some full text. ERS

PERSI (Periodical Source Index) Citations to English and French (Canadian) genealogical and local history periodicals. Covers 1800 to present with a limited number of citations to 1700s material. LH/G

Phone Disc (1995) Telephone directory for residences and businesses. Searchable by name, address, telephone number, or zip code. LH/G

Primary Sources in U.S. History  Primary and secondary source materials in African American and Women's Studies such as court cases, statutes, autobiographies, articles, manuscripts and photographs. Available online at ERS and LH/G

Proquest Historical Newspapers Digital archive for leading newspapers in North America. Full text of the New York Times, the newspaper of record for the United States, is currently available, from its first issue in 1851 through 1999. Available online at ERS and LH/G.

The Sabin Collection Catalog Comprehensive research database of materials describing every aspect of life in the Western hemisphere from 1493 to the 1890s. Access to over 14,000 primary source titles based on Joseph Sabin's bibliography Bibliotheca Americana: A Dictionary of Books Relating to America from its Discovery to the Present Time. ERS

Sanborn Maps Digital Sanborn Maps, 1867-1970 provides access to large-scale maps (50 feet to an inch) of towns and cities in the United States. The State Library subscribes to the New York subset of these maps. Available online at ERS and LH/G.

Soundex Index Covers 1880, 1900 and 1920 Federal Census for New York State. Via GenKit. LH/G

U.S. Military Index Includes records of U. S. military personnel who died in Vietnam or Korea between 1950 and 1975. Available online at http://www.archives.gov/research/korean-war/casualty-lists/index.htmlexternal link.  LH/G

Wilson Biographies Plus Illustrated 72,000+ biographies and obituaries and 20,000+ photographs. Many of the biographies are enhanced with full text, abstracts, and citations from H. W. Wilson databases. It contains the full text of the articles from Current Biography, the World Author Series, and more.  Available online via WilsonWeb at LH/G and ERS.

Worden's Index to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record 1870-1998  Index to NYG&BR contains a surname index and an index to articles by author, title and volume.  LH/G
